forestpeople

It’s amazing how often this saying comes to mind for me in a week.  When surrounded by people who are afraid, dismissive, and patronizing of Indigenous peoples, thought and philosophy, and connection with Life – the overwhelming reaction is an attempt to erase or destroy the Life that seeks wholeness and balance again.

It’s both sad and maddening.  Sad, this is what our people have become. Maddening, they have lost so much connection with Life they will destroy anything that reminds them of their loss.

Last night I was speaking to officials about honoring Indigenous peoples.  I said:

You body works. But it works like a machine. Your brain works.  But it works like a computer. You can compute numbers, and order books, and organize a building. But your heart is not connected. There is no warmth. There is no compassion. So your body works, but you have lost your humanity. What a sad state of affairs to find one’s self.

Returning to the forest, the river, the mountains, the ocean – healing is found there. So many of us have been removed from our places. Like the salmon, the butterfly, and the bird. It’s time to return.
